About Thou Shalt Suffer

Formed in 1991 in Notodden, Norway, Thou Shalt Suffer emerged from earlier projects including Dark Device, Xerasia, and Embryonic. The band served as a foundational entity in the early Norwegian extreme metal scene, featuring musicians Vegard Tveitan (Ihsahn) and Tomas Haugen (Samoth). Musically, the group blended death metal with emerging black metal traits, characterized by Ihsahn’s early integration of keyboard melodies and occult-themed lyrics. The band dissolved in late 1991 as members shifted focus toward the formation of Emperor and Ildjarn. Their early demo material was later compiled and released as Into the Woods of Belial in 1997. In 2000, Ihsahn revived the name for a solo project, shifting the musical direction toward neoclassical and ambient compositions.
