About Amorphis

Formed in Helsinki, Finland, in 1990 by Jan Rechberger, Tomi Koivusaari, and Esa Holopainen, Amorphis emerged as a death and doom metal act. Their debut full-length, The Karelian Isthmus, released in 1992, established their early sound, characterized by a gritty, death-metal-focused approach. While the band later evolved to incorporate progressive, folk, and melodic elements, their foundational work remains rooted in the extreme metal scene of the early 1990s. The group is known for drawing lyrical inspiration from Finnish folklore and the national epic, the Kalevala.
