About Cobalt

Formed in Greeley, Colorado, in 2003, Cobalt established itself as a significant force in American extreme metal by blending black metal with sludge influences. The project, led by multi-instrumentalist Erik Wunder, gained critical recognition for its aggressive, unconventional sound and literary-inspired themes, including war, death, and ritualism. The band's discography includes the 2009 breakthrough album Gin, which integrated progressive and Americana elements into their harsh aesthetic. Following a hiatus and significant lineup changes, the duo returned with the 2016 double album Slow Forever, a sprawling exploration of primal instinct and human nature. Cobalt remained active until 2025, leaving behind a legacy of intense, genre-defying compositions.
