Nocturnus

Formed in 1987 in Tampa, Florida, by drummer and vocalist Mike Browning following his departure from Morbid Angel, Nocturnus emerged as a pioneering technical death metal band. The group gained recognition for integrating keyboards and science fiction-themed lyrics into their sound, elements that were unconventional within the extreme metal landscape of the era. Their debut studio album, The Key (1990), and the follow-up, Thresholds (1992), are noted for their technical guitar work and atmospheric use of synthesizers. The band underwent various lineup changes and periods of inactivity before ultimately splitting. Their catalog remains a foundational example of progressive and technical death metal from the Florida scene.
