Band Profile
At the Gates
Formed in Gothenburg in 1990, At the Gates emerged as a foundational force in the Swedish melodic death metal scene. Their early output, including the debut The Red in the Sky Is Ours (1992) and With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness (1993), showcased a progressive, experimental approach characterized by complex arrangements, unusual melodic phrasing, and the inclusion of atmospheric elements like violin. By the 1994 release of Terminal Spirit Disease, the band began shifting toward a more streamlined, aggressive sound defined by sharp rhythmic precision and harmonized dual-guitar leads. These formative records established the technical brutality and melodic fluidity that would eventually define the Gothenburg sound.
